Images Give Soccer Fans Bird’s-eye View of the Stadiums

GeoEye announced that it has imaged all 2010 FIFA World Cup venues located in South Africa. This year’s international tournament is scheduled to take place June 11 – July 11 and marks the 19th anniversary of the games and Africa’s first World Cup event. The high-resolution satellite image of Mbombela Stadium is featured on GeoEye’s home page. All ten images may be accessed directly from the online sports venues gallery.

All of the images were taken from 423 miles in space as the Company’s high-resolution GeoEye-1 and IKONOS satellites moved over the Earth in a north-to-south orbit at 17,000 miles per hour or four miles per second.

World Cup 2010: What Will it Cost Travelling Fans Once They get to South Africa?

England football fans heading to South Africa this summer could save over a quarter on everyday costs while away, according to ECA International, the world’s leader in the development and provision of solutions for the management and assignment of employees around the world.

With goods and services 27% cheaper on average in South Africa than the UK, travelling fans already have one reason to celebrate.

Japanese supporters will see the biggest savings of around 60%, while for Australians cheering on the Socceroos goods and services will be approximately 40% cheaper. American visitors could make savings of around 30%.

Mexicans who go to South Africa to support their team will experience the smallest difference from home – prices of everyday items are on average 4% cheaper in South Africa than in Mexico.

The news is not so good for followers of Paraguay’s national team. Fans heading to this year’s World Cup should expect to pay around 9% more on average for goods and services while away.

England supporters will be glad to learn that beers in a bar will be a third cheaper than at home – that’s three beers for the price of two. Cigarettes can be bought for two-thirds of the price back home. With those savings likely to prompt the odd hangover the good news is that painkillers are half the price in South Africa than back in the UK. Read more

2010 FIFA World Cup LIVE: SIRIUS XM to broadcast all 64 matches

SIRIUS XM will broadcast every match in its entirety International soccer legend Giorgio Chinaglia will offer exclusive analysis on “The Football Show” throughout the tournament.

SIRIUS XM Radio will broadcast all 64 matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup live from South Africa from June 11 through July 11.

English language broadcasts of every World Cup match, produced by ESPN Radio, will be available nationwide on SIRIUS XM. When multiple matches are played simultaneously, additional SIRIUS XM channels will be devoted to play-by-play, allowing listeners to hear every match in its entirety.

SIRIUS XM listeners will hear ESPN broadcasters JP Dellacamera and Tommy Smyth. Dellacamera has called the last six FIFA World Cups for a variety of television networks as well as the past two Summer Olympic Games. Smyth has called more than 2,500 international matches from leagues all over the world and has worked three FIFA World Cups.

In addition to live play-by-play of every match, SIRIUS XM will offer exclusive analysis throughout the tournament from international soccer legend Giorgio Chinaglia and Charlie Stillitano, who will host special World Cup editions of their SIRIUS XM program, The Football Show. Chinaglia, one of the game’s most prolific goal-scorers, played for Italy in the 1974 FIFA World Cup and earned international renown as a striker for the Italian club Lazio and the New York Cosmos. The Danone Nations Cup is 11 years old! Eleven years of dreams, contacts and sports shared by more than 18 million children. From September 30th through October 3rd, 2010, after six months of national qualifying games in 40 countries, the Danone Nations Cup World Final will fire up South Africa with real human adventure. Zinedine Zidane, faithful ambassador, will be present to launch the final of the world’s largest football competition for children, for the first time away from France.
