New York Yankees America’s Favorite Baseball Team for 8th Year
As we reach the mid-point of the baseball season, it’s time for the All-Star game and for reflections on the sport as a whole. So far in the 2010 Major League Baseball season, pitching has been the star performer, with some memorable perfect games, including the one that was, but wasn’t, and the debut of the Washington Nationals’ young phenom.
But, one thing remains the same when it comes to baseball. Among those who follow the sport, the New York Yankees again win the honor of “America’s Favorite“, as they have each year since 2003. In the second spot on the list are their long time arch-rivals, the Boston Red Sox, followed by the Atlanta Braves at number three; both of these teams’ positions are unchanged from last year.
Rounding out the top five are the Philadelphia Phillies at number four, rising from 7th place last year, and the Chicago Cubs, who may not win pennants, but do win a lot of hearts.
These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,227 adults surveyed online between June 14 and 21, 2010 by Harris Interactive.
Looking at the bottom half of the top ten favorite baseball teams, at number six are the New York Mets, up from number 11 last year; the San Francisco Giants (#7, up from #9); the Los Angeles Dodgers (#8, down from a tie at #4); the Minnesota Twins (#9, up from #13); and the St. Louis Cardinals (#10, down from #6). Victorino, Inge Win Record-Breaking All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote Races
Fans of Tigers, Phillies help first-time All-Stars earn St. Louis spots
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Shane Victorino and Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge were chosen by fans as the winners of the 2009 All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote in record-shattering voting exclusively on MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball, and the individual Club sites.
Baseball fans supported the 10 candidates named by All-Star managers Joe Maddon and Charlie Manuel in unprecedented fashion by casting a record 68.6 million votes since the program commenced on Sunday, July 5 at 2:00 p.m. (EDT). This year’s record number of votes represents an increase of 43.5 percent from the previous mark of 47.8 million set in 2008. Since its inception in 2002, the All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote has now recorded nearly 200 million votes.
The National League winner, Victorino, received the highest total number of votes ever, surpassing Evan Longoria’s nine million in 2008, and led all vote-getters with 15.6 million en route to becoming the second Phillies player to win the balloting (Bobby Abreu, 2004). He was followed by Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants, Mark Reynolds of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cristian Guzman of the Washington Nationals.
On the American League ballot, Inge became the first Detroit player to win the All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote by holding off Ian Kinsler of the Texas Rangers to claim the final spot on the All-Star roster with a final tally of 11.8 million votes, the most ever for an American League player. Inge and Kinsler were followed by Chone Figgins of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; Carlos Pena of the Tampa Bay Rays; and Adam Lind of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Previous winners of the All-Star Sprint Game Final Vote are: Evan Longoria (AL, 2008); Corey Hart (NL, 2008), Hideki Okajima (AL, 2007); Chris Young (NL, 2007); A.J. Pierzynski (AL, 2006); Nomar Garciaparra (NL, 2006); Scott Podsednik (AL, 2005); Roy Oswalt (NL, 2005); Hideki Matsui (AL, 2004); Bobby Abreu (NL, 2004); Jason Varitek (AL, 2003); Geoff Jenkins (NL, 2003); Johnny Damon (AL, 2002); and Andruw Jones (NL, 2002).

The Phillies World Championship Celebration Culminates with Ring Ceremony
Since October 29, 2008, the Phillies have enjoyed the celebration of their World Series Championship. Today, the celebration culminated in what was the second most highly anticipated event of the victory — the first being the parade; the second, a 20-minute ring ceremony held during pre-game festivities for a crowd of more than 44,000 people attending the Citizens Bank Businessperson’s Special.
Members of the 2008 team, coaches, manager, general manager, trainers and the director of team travel received their rings on the field from Phillies President and CEO; David Montgomery. A total of 37 rings were delivered to the field by a Citizens Bank van escorted by four Philadelphia police officers on motorcycles.
Until today, the rings had not been seen by the recipients, and were held as a closely guarded secret to ensure that the surprise and excitement were elevated for today’s meaningful ceremony.
Pat Gillick, who constructed the World Championship team during his 27th and final season as a major league general manager, was the first ring recipient. Philadelphia’s favorite skipper, Manager Charlie Manuel received his ring second, as the sold-out crowd chanted “Char-lie, Char-lie.”
“A World Series Championship ring is a most prized possession,” said Montgomery. “We wanted to present our players and others in the Phillies organization with a meaningful tribute that appropriately commemorates bringing a World Championship to Philadelphia. I believe this ring certainly does that.”
“The ring is one of the finest I’ve seen and it tells a great story,” said Bob Bourbeau, Director of Sports and Special Markets for Masters of Design, the Attleboro, Mass.-based jewelry manufacturer that worked with the organization. “The extraordinary attention and level of detail that the Phillies provided throughout the process allowed us to design and produce an outstanding keepsake.”
World Series Ring Description
Each 14 karat white gold ring contains 103 diamonds, totaling 3.84 karats. The 103 diamonds represent the 92 regular season and 11 postseason wins for the Phillies in 2008. The top of the ring is crowned with a ruby inlay, topped with the Phillies’ signature “P” which is inset with diamonds. The title “World Champions” is written along the ring’s top and bottom outer rim. The left side of the ring features the player’s name and number atop and below the Liberty Bell. The right side of the ring depicts the World Series trophy rising out of Citizens Bank Park signifying the tremendous support of our fans, along with the initials of the two World Series teams and the number of games won by each team.
