Arie Ouimet awarded coveted 2010 top karter scholarship of $45,000

Volkswagen Motorsport is proud to announce Arie Ouimet of Plymouth, Massachusetts as their 2010 Karting Qualifier award winner. Ouimet competed against thirty karters for the top prize–a $45,000 scholarship towards the 2010 Jetta TDI Cup season.

“The skill level of our karters through the selection process proved to be extremely competitive and Arie should be proud of his performance that led to him earning the top prize,” states Dennis McCormack, Program Director of the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup. “I am proud of Arie for his accomplishments through the qualifiers and final selection event and look forward to the first race at Virginia International Raceway in April.”

Ouimet competed in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Karting Qualifiers where he became one of thirty karting finalists to move on to the final driver selection event of the 2010 season. The final selection event was held in Las Vegas, Nevada, where over 40 drivers came out to compete for the coveted 25 positions of the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup driver field. Drivers were instructed in multiple sessions including mentoring from professional driving instructors, media training, sponsorship development, fitness assessment, Volkswagen brand familiarization, autocross and karting courses, and track time in a Jetta TDI Cup car. After three days of the selection process, Ouimet was chosen as the top finalist from the karting program and was awarded the $45,000 scholarship.

“Arie was the most consistent and improved driver through our selection process,” said Ryan Arciero, Volkswagen Factory Driver and VW Jetta TDI Cup Driving Instructor “Arie ended the three days at the top of our scoring sheets and proved he deserves the scholarship. He was up against seasoned drivers from various facets of racing and managed to earn the top karting position after rigorous testing throughout the final driver selection event.”

The final 25 drivers that will compete in the 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup will be heading to Virginia International Raceway in April for races 1 and 2 of the season. Drivers will compete in ten road course races throughout North America in identical, factory-prepared and maintained clean diesel Jetta TDIs. Most Recognized, Comprehensive College Rankings & Resource for High School Athletes Awards Highest Honor to Stanford University for 2nd Straight Year Survey Lists Overall Elite 50 & Individual Team Rankings for 21 Varsity Sports

STACK Media, the leading producer and distributor of sports performance, instruction and lifestyle content for high school athletes, announced the findings from its third annual “STACK Elite 50 College Rankings” – which is the most recognized, comprehensive college rankings and resource of its kind and a powerful research tool for any high school athlete looking to compete and study at the next level. For the second straight year, Stanford University came out on top by finishing number one in seven of the 21 sport-specific rankings. Aside from the overall Elite 50 standings, which highlights the best schools in terms of a strong overall athletic presence, individual team rankings for 21 varsity sports are also listed. The full rankings can be found in STACK Media’s Holiday print edition, which is out today.

In addition to rankings and stories about top ranked schools in the Holiday edition of STACK Magazine, STACK Media has also compiled exclusive interviews with Elite 50 colleges’ coaches, athletes and academic advisors on the dedicated section of the Web site – http://elite50.stack.com/.

“Serious high school athletes want to elevate their game to the next level with credible information on training and performance, but reliable sources on their best options for schools with top academic and athletic programs are extremely limited for them to turn to,” said Nick Palazzo, Co-founder and Co-CEO of STACK Media. “The college recruiting and selection process is demanding, time consuming and stressful, and we aim to make it easier for students in researching and calculating the top colleges out there with the STACK Elite 50 College Rankings. Whatever your sport of choice may be, we’ve listed the right college for you.”

*Stanford University claims top spot

Stanford University was the first ever repeat winner by coming out number one in eight sports and fielding 17 top-15 squads, along with being ranked by U.S. News as America’s fourth best academic college/university. Florida nailed down the number two overall ranking with only one top-ranked sport (softball), but had 15 top-15 squads and was ranked 47 by U.S. News. The school jumped from last year’s number five listing.

The North Carolina Tar Heels, who were number one in ’07 and number three in ’08, claim their third consecutive top-five overall finish. UNC dominates the baseball diamond with an Elite 50 “Triple Crown” – three years running as the top baseball program. This was combined with a well-respected U.S. News spot at 28 and 11 top-15 teams. The Texas Longhorns came in at number four, but dropped from number two overall last year. And rounding out the top five is the University of South Carolina thanks to a sneaky four-sport attack, led by the football squad’s three-peat. Women’s golf, men’s tennis and men’s T&F also ranked number one.

“It was another competitive year for the top spot, with many worthy contenders,” Palazzo added. “We congratulate Stanford University for yet another number one ranking. The men and women of Palo Alto can be very proud for upholding the title of best college for academically minded athletes. And any high school athlete looking to play at the collegiate level has 50 fantastic schools from our Elite 50 list that they should have on their radar screen, as they are all top-notch schools in terms of both academics and sports.”

In order to determine the sport-specific rankings, STACK Media uses five main indicators of excellence. One source is the 2010 U.S. News & World Report on America’s best colleges, which each year ranks the nation’s top colleges and universities, strictly in terms of academic prowess. Also considered is the Academic Progress Rate (APR) system that measures how well a collegiate athletic team’s members progress toward graduation during their playing careers. A third indicator is the end-of-the-season national rankings and polls from various national outlets that sum up the entire season’s results. A team’s win-loss record is also considered, where the number of games over .500 for each team is calculated over the past three seasons, and then awarded points based on that total. Finally, there’s the ‘STACK Factor,’ or the strength of the overall athletic community in terms of the level of athletic support and ability throughout all 21 varsity sports covered.

Chinas Universities open the door for baseball players

June 25, 2009 · Filed Under Baseball, Other sports, Sports News · Comment

Chinese Baseball Association Hails Historic Announcement

Several of China’s Universities have agreed to add baseball to their list of sports that offer a passport to a tertiary education: a move that baseball insiders have greeted as instantly increasing the People’s Republic’s potential to produce stars in the future.

Shanghai International Studies University, North China University of Technology, and Nanjing University of Technology, East China University of Political Science and Law, Guangzhou Sport University and Tianjin University of Sport have all agreed that they will include baseball among the sports where young talent will be recruited at lower academic admission requirements or exempted them for immediate admission.

“The cooperation of these Universities with CBA is of epoch-making significance. Baseball will become a popular and favorable sport to the young generation now,” Madam SHEN Wei, Secretary-General of the Chinese Baseball Association (CBA) and an Executive Committee Member of International Baseball Federation, the worldwide governing body for the sport of baseball said.

“I’m not sure how easy it is for baseball fans anywhere else in the world to understand the significance of this. It’s a milestone for youth baseball development!” declared Chinese-born financier Kenny HUANG Jian Hua, the chairman of QSL Sports Limited, who earlier this month was unveiled as the CBA’s long-term partner chosen to China Youth Baseball League (“CYBL”).

“This is an enormous step in unlocking the potential of a country of 1.4 billion people. Now baseball is a potential path into the university system it will free hundreds of young players to continue to combine their studies with their sport, instead of being forced to drop baseball completely, and it will inspire thousands more, maybe even tens of thousands children, to give the sport a try! “

Huang’s excitement stems from the enormous importance Chinese parents place in their offspring’s education, a phenomenon that can be traced back to the country’s so-called “one-child policy”.

“For many families there is only one chance, so they plan their child’s education very carefully, almost from the day they are born,” explained Huang, who graduated from Chinese Zhong Shan University, one of the top 10 universities in China before furthering his studies in the United States. Huang has also been involved in a variety of sports deals involving the New York Yankees.

“Naturally, they are reluctant to let anything get in the way of their child’s future. Now, however, baseball can be part of that future. The fact is, overnight, playing baseball has turned into something that can improve the talented child’s chances of getting into a good university!”

Almost all Chinese universities reserve a proportion of places, with slightly lower academic requirements, for talented young athletes with basketball, soccer and volleyball among the most common sports. Earning one of these places is notoriously difficult.

One of the universities entering into the swing of baseball is particularly likely to attract the attention of parents with would-be sluggers or flame-throwing pitchers: The Shanghai International Studies University is one of China’s leading foreign language colleges and part of China’s prestigious “Project 211″ programme aimed at developing its universities into world-class academic establishments.

Meanwhile the CBA has also announced an acceleration in the growth of their sport. Mme SHEN revealed that, through a co-operation with the Ministry of Education, 1,000 schools now have baseball teams, of which 140 are in the tertiary educational institutions. Official statistics now suggest that over 100,000 Chinese are engaged in baseball activities.
