The winners of the 2011 Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) Awards were unveiled tonight on MLB Network and MLB.com during a show hosted by MLB Network’s Greg Amsinger and Mitch Williams.

David Freese of the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals was the only multiple award winner, as he earned Postseason MVP and top Postseason Moment for his dramatic game-tying, ninth-inning triple in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series.

In addition to the Cardinals, four other Clubs claimed multiple GIBBY winners, including the Arizona Diamondbacks (Kirk Gibson, Manager of the Year; Ian Kennedy, Breakout Player of the Year); Detroit Tigers (Justin Verlander, Starting Pitcher of the Year; Jose Valverde, Closer of the Year); New York Yankees (David Robertson, Setup Man of the Year; Robinson Cano, Wow Factor of the Year; Derek Jeter, Performance of the Year); and Tampa Bay Rays (Dan Johnson, Moment of the Year; Evan Longoria, Walk-Off of the Year).

This year’s winners of the GIBBY Awards – the ultimate trophies honoring the best players and must-see moments from the 2011 Major League Baseball season – were determined through a comprehensive six-week voting process (Oct. 29-Dec. 4) that included national and local media members, Major League Club front office personnel, former Major League players and online fan balloting at MLB.com. Over the past four seasons, fans have cast more than 40 million online votes for the 19 categories, none of which were restricted to individual League affiliation. A complete list of 2011 winners and highlights can be found at MLB.com/GIBBYs.

QUOTES FROM THE 2011 GIBBY AWARDS SHOW

GIBSON – “I’d like to thank all the fans and everybody who voted for me for Manager of the Year. It’s an exceptional honor for me, being a rookie manager. … It’s exemplary of why we all get up and play the game hard with dedication, and do it the right way every day.”

KENNEDY – “I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me for this award. It’s an honor. Every one of those guys is deserving and had great years. I’d like to thank my teammates for putting me in this position to win this award.”

JOHN MOZELIAK (Executive of the Year) – “I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me on this award. It’s a great honor, and I take a lot of pride in being recognized in this. … There are so many great people who work in our front office who deserve credit for this award. I’m honored and humbled by this. I also want to recognize our ownership that gives us so much support throughout the year.”

BEN REVERE (Play of the Year) – “I just want to say thank you to the fans who voted for me, to the Minnesota Twins faithful, and to MLB.com and MLB Network for allowing me to accept this honor.”

ROBERTSON – “This is a huge honor. This is one of those things I didn’t expect to win.”

Sports memorabilia and charity fundraising company Grandstandsports.com is bringing together Bill Buckner and Mookie Wilson to relive the infamous moment that linked them together in baseball immortality.

The reunion charity eventwill take place at Bowlmor Lanes in Times Square on Oct. 25, which is exactly 25 years to the day of game six of the 1986 World Series.

In the 10th inning, with the score tied, Wilson stepped in with a full count and the winning run in scoring position. Hitting a slow ground ball up the first base line that appeared to be playable for Boston first baseman Bill Buckner, Wilson dashed out of the box only to see the ball sneak between the legs of Buckner, who was playing on two bad ankles. The ball skirted around Buckner’s glove and rolled slowly into right field. The Mets win.

Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New York. Grandstandsports.com CEO, Howard Schwartz, spoke about his affinity for the organization: ”The opportunity to bring these two legends together is a dream come true for baseball fans everywhere. This is going to be an unforgettable evening for all and the fact that Ronald McDonald House Charities are benefitting from the outcome makes it a ‘home run’ in every sense of the word.”

A fun night out for adults and kids alike, the evening will consist of meet and greet opportunities with both Bill Buckner and Mookie Wilson, along with photographs and autographs of the legends. There will also be an organized question and answer portion of the evening along with a large silent and live charity auction. Auction items include a VIP Tour of Citi Field with a former Mets World Series legend. The night also includes open bar, hors d’oeuvres, and free bowling during the event.

Fans can purchase tickets (Starting at just $199) by calling 1-888-78-GRAND (888-784-7263) or at www.grandstandsports.com/1986.

Former All-Star Third Baseman and Current ESPN Analyst Aaron Boone Surprises Standout with Elite Honor

In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, announced Dylan Bundy of Owasso High (Owasso, Okla.) as its 2010-11 Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. Bundy was surprised with the news during a youth baseball clinic by former All-Star Third Baseman Aaron Boone.

“It felt great to surprise Dylan with the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year award and welcome him into one of the most prestigious legacy programs in high school sports,” said Boone. ”Gatorade has been on the sidelines fueling athletic performance for years, so to be recognized by a brand that understands the game and truly helps athletes perform is a huge honor for these kids.”

As the recipient of the 231st Gatorade National Player of the Year trophy to be awarded since 1985, Bundy becomes only the second player from the state of Oklahoma to earn Gatorade National Player of the Year honors. The other was A.J. Hinch (Midwest City, Okla.) in 1991-92, a catcher who went on to play seven years in the MLB and now serves as Vice President of Professional Scouting for the San Diego Padres.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Bundy as the nation’s best high school baseball player. A national advisory panel comprised of sport-specific experts and sports journalists helped select Bundy from more than 472,644 baseball players nationwide. Bundy is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year award, to be presented at a special ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound junior right-handed pitcher and third baseman posted an 11-0 record on the mound with a 0.20 ERA, 158 strikeouts and just five walks in 71 innings-pitched this past season, leading the Rams (37-2) to the Class 6A state final. Now a three-time Gatorade Oklahoma Baseball Player of the Year, Bundy also batted .467 with 11 home runs, 54 RBIs and 50 runs scored this spring. He tossed eight complete-game shutouts, including one no-hitter, registered a save and allowed only two earned runs to score in 2011. He finished his senior season with a 0.35 WHIP and opposing hitters managed just a 0.81 batting average against him. Bundy averaged 15.5 strikeouts per seven innings this year en route to a 31.6-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio.

Bundy is the nation’s only three-time winner of Gatorade State Baseball Player of the Year honors in the award’s 26-year history. He was an Aflac and Under Armour All-American in 2010 and a Rawlings First Team All-American in 2011. Bundy has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on scholarship at the University of Texas this fall, but is projected as an early first-round selection in this month’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

“Bundy established himself as the best high school pitcher in this draft early in the spring and hasn’t let up at all, pushing himself into top-5 pick consideration,” said Keith Law, Senior Baseball Writer for ESPN.com. “Bundy has stuff, command, and aggressiveness with a big-league arsenal that includes a fastball up to 99 and an outstanding cutter. He throws strikes and attacks hitters on both sides of the plate. With great makeup, stuff, and track record, Bundy shouldn’t get out of the top 10 picks.”

Bundy has maintained a 3.72 GPA in the classroom. He has volunteered locally on behalf of both First United Methodist Church and Owasso Community Resources holiday service missions since 2009, participating in an annual drive that distributes 3,000 holiday turkeys. He has also donated his time as a baseball clinic instructor at Sperry and Owasso high schools since 2008. Bundy recently initiated a grassroots effort for Rams athletes to provide additional humanitarian relief to victims of the Joplin, Mo. tornadoes.

“Without question, Dylan is deserving of recognition as the nation’s best high school baseball player based on his statistics on the field and the impact his accomplishments have had on Owasso High’s success,” said Gatorade Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing Jennifer Storms. ”But he is also a shining example to peers and aspiring young athletes of what a leader and a student-athlete should be. He represents everything we hope for in a Gatorade Player of the Year recipient.”

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Brand Affinity Technology Ranks Baseball Stars with Greatest Preseason Popularity Gains as Season Opens

Washington Nationals’ left fielder Michael Morse has earned the top spot on Brand Affinity Technology’s monthly list of Rising Sports Stars. This special MLB-only edition of the list identifies baseball players with the most significant leaps in popularity during the preseason – athletes poised for greatness as the season starts. Morse turned heads with nine home runs during spring training, making him one of the most watched players as the regular season begins. His popularity increased a whopping 92% over the preseason, putting him at the top of the list of stars to watch in the month of April.

This month’s Rising Stars list is the youngest to date, with none of the athletes more than 25 years old. The top three spots on the list were rounded out by up-and-coming young pitchers Brett Anderson of the Oakland Athletics and Jeremy Hellickson of the Tampa Bay Rays. The full list and additional details are available at: www.brandaffinity.net/RisingStars/april2011.

Washington, DC, whose hometown Nationals have finished in last place in all but one year since relocating from Montreal in 2005, is the unhappiest pro baseball city, according to analysis by Avvo, which offers free ratings and profiles for 90 percent of licensed doctors and lawyers in the U.S. Interestingly enough, Baltimore, located about 40 miles north of the nation’s capital and home to the Orioles, who last won a World Series in 1983, is the third most depressed baseball city, with Oakland (Athletics) sandwiched between.

Batting cleanup in the lineup of brokenhearted baseball cities is Seattle, then Houston, San Diego, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago (Cubs fans), Pittsburgh, Denver, Los Angeles, New York (Mets fans), Tampa, Dallas, Kansas City, Detroit and Milwaukee.

“Baseball fans are incredibly passionate about their teams so it’s no surprise they suffer from bouts of depression and disappointment after a big loss or after the seemingly endless succession of losing seasons,” said Mark Britton, founder and CEO of Avvo.

Below is a list of the most depressed baseball cities (in order):

Washington, DC

Oakland

Baltimore

Seattle

Houston

San Diego

Cleveland

Cincinnati

Chicago (Cubs)

Pittsburgh

Denver

Los Angeles

New York (Mets)

Tampa

Dallas

Kansas City

Detroit

Milwaukee

Methodology: Avvo reviewed data in cities that are home to 18 MLB teams that haven’t won a World Series in the past 20 years, and examined the teams’ on-field performance. In the nine weighted categories, cities and teams were ranked first to last. Statistics used to establish the rankings included: psychiatrists and divorce lawyers per capita (Avvo), unemployment rate (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics), drinking rate, suicide rate and mentally unhealthy days reported among adults (CDC), and medical and legal-related questions (Avvo), as well as number of days over the past three seasons each team held first place and days eliminated from first place contention (Baseball-Reference.com).
