New App Helps Coaches and Parents Recognize and Respond to Possible Concussions in Young Athletes

May 29, 2011 · Filed Under Other sports, Sports News · Comment

A new Concussion Recognition & Response app from PAR allows coaches and parents to quickly determine whether an individual is exhibiting and/or reporting the signs and symptoms of a suspected concussion.

In less than 5 minutes, coaches and parents can go through a checklist of possible signs and symptoms to decide whether to remove the child from play and seek medical attention.

The app also provides home symptom monitoring for post-injury follow-up. Designed for the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and Android device or tablet, the app is now available for download from the Apple App Store or Android Market.

Using information from the CDC’s “Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports” program, the app guides users through a set of questions to determine the likelihood of a suspected concussion based on observations by the parent or coach as well as symptoms reported by the athlete.

  • Takes only 5 minutes or less to complete the checklist.
  • Easily tracks athletes’ recovery to share with health care providers.
  • Records GPS location of each incident for documentation.
  • A portion of all proceeds will be donated to support concussion research.

PAR’s Concussion Recognition & Response app was developed by concussion experts Gerard A. Gioia, PhD, a pediatric neuropsychologist and chief of the Division of Pediatric Neuropsychology at Children’s National Medical Center, and Jason Mihalik, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina.

Serb qualifies for London as 2011 unbeaten streak continues

Novak Djokovic has sealed his qualification for the 2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals following his win over Rafael Nadal in the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

Djokovic’s win in Rome adds another 1000 South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings points to his 2011 points tally, meaning that the Serb is assured of his place at the season-ending finale, set to take place at The O2 in London from 20-27 November. Only the world’s Top 8 players based on results in 2011 qualify to compete in the season’s final showdown in London.

Djokovic qualifies for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals for a fifth successive year. He captured the season-ending title in 2008 when it was held in Shanghai. Last year, Djokovic reached the semi-finals in London before losing to Federer. He has not lost a match since.

The Serb has enjoyed a remarkable run of form in 2011, capturing seven successive titles including the Australian Open in January and four ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles. He heads into Roland Garros later this week with an incredible 37-0 match record so far this season. Read more

“Before Chevrolet was a brand, Louis Chevrolet and his brothers made a name for themselves behind the wheel of a race car,” said Jim Campbell, GM vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “After Chevrolet became a car company, Louis and his brothers continued to race at Indy, forging one of the most storied relationships in automotive racing.

“That history includes some of the most memorable cars that have paced the Indianapolis 500, well as many checkered flags won under Chevrolet power,” Campbell said. “With a new Chevrolet race engine competing in next year’s race, the relationship between Indy and Chevrolet is heating back up.” Read more
