The Caged Heat Racing Series is set to make motor sports history as it becomes the first racing series of its kind. This innovative series is designed to pit 30 custom-built half-scale stock cars against each other, on a custom engineered 22-foot high indoor caged racetrack.

April 2010 will mark the beginning of a new era in car racing, as the Caged Heat Racing Series kicks into high gear for a 20-city tour across the U.S. This family focussed, entertainment experience will fuse the sport of racing with the energy of a rock concert.

Race nights will consist of lighting, audio, and pyrotechnic effects as drivers compete

in The Cage; a 22-foot-tall track, banked at 67.5 degrees, with 125-foot straight-aways, and 80-foot x 180-degree sweeping turns that fits into NHL sized hockey arenas.

“We’re very excited about the launch of this exciting new sports property, and to be in discussions with potential sponsors and partners who see the value proposition and ROI that the Caged Heat Racing Series offers,” said Thomas Wall, CEO Caged Heat Racing Series. “With the popularity of racing in the United States and an economy on the rebound, now is the perfect time to offer race fans and sponsors a new, affordable, exciting sport.”

“My family and I have been involved in racing our whole lives and The Caged Heat Racing Series is truly a unique event that I’m very excited to witness and be affiliated with,” said Jeff Andretti, former IndyCar and NASCAR driver and CEO of Jeff Andretti Coaching Group.

This watershed moment will bring racing fans an intimate in-arena experience, allowing them to get close to the action. In addition, sponsors will have the exclusive opportunity to fully engage their consumers, by working along side series officials to create innovative strategic plans that not only grow the sport, but drive their business interests.

Athlete: The Sports Illustrated photography of Walter Iooss opens Oct. 9 at the Newseum

September 25, 2009 · Filed Under Other sports, Sports Fun, Sports News · Comment

See some of the greatest names in sports as you’ve never seen them before in “Athlete,” a new Newseum exhibit featuring highlights from the career of legendary Sports Illustrated photographer Walter Iooss Jr. For this exclusive exhibit, Iooss selected more than 40 photos that represent his favorite moments from nearly 50 years as a sports photographer.

From classic images of superstars such as Muhammad Ali, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Serena Williams and Michael Phelps to photos of children playing soccer and stickball, Iooss’s work reflects a lifetime of documenting the impulse that connects all athletes: a pure love of the sport. His photos have appeared on more than 300 Sports Illustrated covers — the most by any photographer.

“‘Athlete’ truly captures the passion and personalities of sports worldwide, and these powerful images are amplified by Walter Iooss’s own words,” said Ken Paulson, president of the Newseum.

Iooss’s descriptions of his photographs provide an insider’s look at some of the legends of the sports world. He talks about his relationship with his favorite athlete, Michael Jordan, and recalls the emotional day he photographed his boyhood hero, Johnny Unitas, whose hand was so damaged by football that he couldn’t hold a cup of coffee.

Also on display in “Athlete” are Iooss’s personal diaries, filled with collages of his photos, quirky headlines and his handwritten notes. The exhibit includes an original Newseum-produced video in which the photographer talks about his photos and the bonds he forged with his subjects.

Iooss (pronounced “yose,” as in “dose”) has been called the “photo laureate of American sports.” He started photographing sports events at age 16, when his father gave him a camera. Two years later, his photos appeared in Sports Illustrated for the first time.

Many of the photos in “Athlete: The Sports Illustrated Photography of Walter Iooss” were published in Iooss’s 2008 book, “Athlete.” The Newseum exhibit includes Iooss’s most famous photograph, “The Catch,” which captured the last-minute touchdown catch by San Francisco 49ers’ receiver Dwight Clark that ended the Dallas Cowboys’ Super Bowl dreams in 1982.

“Athlete” will be on display at the Newseum from Oct. 9 through Dec. 31, 2009.

Over 800 Villagers From Four Villages Compete in Colorful Race

Located in the vast waters of the of the Pacific Ocean, the Micronesian island of Kosrae has plenty of room for hundreds of canoeists to roam. That’s what’s needed to accommodate the hundreds of islanders participating in the second island-wide Outrigger Canoe Competition on October 24, 2009, one of the largest events of its kind in Micronesia.

“Canoeing is becoming a major sport on Kosrae,” said Grant Ismael, executive director of the Kosrae Visitors Bureau. “This race draws Kosraens of all ages, and visitors love the camaraderie and excitement.”

Some 800 paddlers from Kosrae’s four villages – Utwe, Malem, Lelu, Tafunsak – will compete for prizes and community pride during the event and celebration. The teams will race in traditional six-person outrigger canoes, in a fleet of 130 total canoes.

The official day of competition comes after months of practicing and preparation, including building the traditional outrigger canoes used in the race. Tall breadfruit trees are felled and brought down the mountain by each village. Village teams dig out the trees to make canoes with the guidance of a traditional canoe master builder.

On the day of the race, all of Kosrae turns out in their village colors to cheer for their teams. One of the favorite Kosraen traditions is to out sing and out cheer the other village teams.

THE ISLAND OF KOSRAE

Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Kosrae is a peaceful spot and an adventure and eco-traveler’s paradise. This internationally acclaimed dive destination is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and has a population of some 7,000 people. An island with majestic vertical elevations, Kosrae’s lush green interior is surrounded by one of the world’s most pristine reef systems and white coral beaches on the island’s rim. Running Outside? Nathan Performance Gear offers 5 tips for safer running

September 16, 2009 · Filed Under Athletics, Other sports, Sports Fun, Sports News · Comment

Wearing reflective, carrying cell phone among key recommendations

As cooler weather and shorter days begin to put an end to the last memories of summer for much of the U.S., Nathan Performance Gear(TM), a leader in hydration, reflective, and multi-sport gear and accessories, reminds runners to practice safe running when hitting the roads this fall.

“This time of year in particular serves as an opportune time to remind people, who may be getting themselves and their family back in a routine after the lazy days of summer, about several quick and easy to-dos that can help lead to safer running,” says Megan Russell, vice president of marketing and sales for Penguin Brands, Inc., of which Nathan is a subsidiary.

While several components fall under the broad umbrella of “safe running,” including routine physician appointments, running with a buddy, and others, Russell puts an emphasis on five key recommendations that are easy to do and can often get overlooked by even the most dedicated runner. These five tips include:

– Wear reflective. Wearing reflective when out on the roads helps cars, bikes, and other people detect, react, and maneuver in time to avoid a potential disastrous situation more quickly than when not wearing reflective. Nathan offers several vests and accessories that offer 360-degree visibility up to 1200 feet.
– Carry identification. Every second counts in an emergency, and carrying identification can help direct first responders to pertinent information quickly and efficiently. Nathan introduced two belts this year — the Shadow Pak and the Reflective Belt — that feature both an incorporated I.D. card and I.D. stitching.
– Bring a cell phone. A twisted ankle, an unfamiliar route, or a longer-than-expected run can all benefit from having a cell phone handy to alert the appropriate people. The Shadow Pak and the Reflective Belt make running with a cell phone easy, with both featuring limited-stretch mesh pockets that fit almost any-sized cell phone, including the iPhone.
– Stay properly hydrated — before, during, and after. Fluids help athletes perform better, recover better, and are good for overall health, even when not exercising. Nathan makes it easy to stay hydrated while running through its line of handheld water bottles, including the 10 oz. Sprint and the 22 oz. QuickDraw Elite, and its line of BPA-free Stainless Steel bottles, which come in two different sizes, 500 mL and 700 mL, with a third size, 320 mL kids-sized bottles, on the way in 2010.
– Have someone know your route. Having a spouse, family member, or friend ensures someone knows the expected route — and approximate beginning and end time — of a run, and if that expected end time passed hours ago.

To drive home these points even further this year, Nathan introduced the Run Safe Initiative, a partnership with its retailers that promotes the ideals of running safe to consumers.

“The only thing more important to us than an athlete’s performance is their safety, and it’s our hope that through the cooperation of our retailers, we can get the message out to athletes that it’s important for their health and safety to run both smart and safe,” says Russell. “We’ve already had great response from our retailers, and plan to continue rolling out the initiative throughout the year.”
